Vermouth-arita

The code is the shorthand off my printed menu; the Key tab decodes every letter.
- 1 1/2 oz Tequila
- 1 oz Sweet vermouth
- 1/2 oz Orange liqueur
- 1/2 oz Lime juice
Shake hard with ice, then strain.
Rocks, iced, cherry.
Taste
An ounce and a half of tequila against a full ounce of sweet vermouth, so the wine is a second base. Half an ounce of orange liqueur and half of lime are the Margarita's other two, cut down. Shaken, rocks, ice, cherry. A tequila Manhattan that took a lime.
History
No pre-1970 manual has a Vermouth-arita, and Difford's, Punch, and Imbibe have nothing under that name. The parent is the Margarita: tequila, orange liqueur, and lime, a formula in print by 1937 as William J. Tarling's Picador and under this name by 1953. The tequila and the shake stay; a full ounce of sweet vermouth goes in, the orange liqueur and lime drop to half an ounce each, and it is poured over ice with a cherry.
