Taste

Four equal three-quarter-ounce pours: apple brandy, elderflower liqueur, orange liqueur, lemon. Nothing leads. The elderflower is floral honey against the orchard, and the orange liqueur is peel; the lemon is the whole sour. Coupe, apple garnish. It drinks as a Sidecar that split the cognac and the orange liqueur and put apple and elderflower in their place.

History

Southern Point turns up in none of the pre-1970 manuals, and Difford's, Punch, and Imbibe do not list it by that name. Equal-parts sours of this shape are modern, and the elderflower half of it cannot predate Robert Cooper's St-Germain, launched in 2007. The nearest parent is the Sidecar: brandy, orange liqueur, and lemon. Here apple brandy replaces the cognac, the sweet is split between elderflower and orange liqueur, and all four go in at three-quarters of an ounce, shaken, in a coupe with an apple garnish.
