Lani-Honi
Barline 1q,1q,Q,R
The code is the shorthand off my printed menu; the Key tab decodes every letter.
- 1 1/4 oz Light rum
- 1 1/4 oz Bénédictine
- 3/4 oz Lemon juice
Shake hard with ice, then strain.
Rocks, iced.
Taste
Equal ounces and a quarter of light rum and Benedictine, three-quarters lemon. The liqueur is honey and spice, the lemon a sour cut, the rum a cane floor. Rocks glass with ice: it sits and dilutes. Herbal punch.
History
Jeff Berry and Annene Kaye print the Lani-Honi in Beachbum Berry's Grog Log. It was served aboard the Matson Line's SS Mariposa on its 42-day South Seas cruise in 1962: an ounce and a half of Benedictine, an ounce of light Puerto Rican rum, half an ounce of lemon, shaken and strained into a wine goblet of crushed ice. The original is a liqueur drink with rum riding second. This menu equalizes rum and Benedictine at an ounce and a quarter each, raises the lemon to three-quarters, and pours it over ice in a rocks glass.
