Taste

Two ounces of tequila, three-quarters grenadine, three-quarters lime. Equal pomegranate and lime, a pink tequila sour. Two dashes of Angostura pull clove through the fruit. Shaken, coupe, cherry. Short.

History

Charles H. Baker records the Mexican Firing Squad Special in The Gentleman's Companion, Volume II (1939), as a drink he found at La Cucaracha Bar in Mexico City in 1937: two jiggers tequila, juice of two small limes, one and a half to two teaspoons of grenadine, two dashes of Angostura, in a tall collins packed with cracked ice, garnished with orange, pineapple, and cherry. Period menus from the bar do not list it; it may have been off-menu. This menu keeps the tequila, grenadine, lime, and Angostura, equalizes the grenadine and lime at three-quarters, and pours it short in a coupe with a cherry.
