The code is the shorthand off my printed menu; the Key tab decodes every letter.
- 2 oz Bourbon
- 1/2 oz Maraschino liqueur
- 1 dash Angostura bitters
- 1 dash Orange bitters
Stir with ice until cold, then strain.
Rocks, iced, orange twist.
Taste
Two ounces of bourbon, half an ounce of maraschino. One dash of Angostura, one of orange bitters. The cherry liqueur is almond and pit as much as fruit, and it does the sweetening. Stirred, rocks with ice, orange twist.
History
The Fancy Free first appears in Crosby Gaige's Cocktail Guide and Ladies' Companion, printed in 1941: a jigger of Fine Arts whiskey, two dashes of maraschino, a dash each of Angostura and orange bitters, shaken, strained into a sugar-rimmed cocktail glass. Gaige was a New York publisher and theatrical producer; Punch treats the naming as his. Revival bartenders, working from Milk & Honey spec sheets, dropped the sugar rim, stirred it, and poured it over ice with an orange twist. This menu keeps the two ounces of bourbon, the half ounce of maraschino, one dash of each bitters, rocks, orange.
