Gin, stirred

The code is the shorthand off my printed menu; the Key tab decodes every letter.
- 2 oz Gin
- 1/2 oz Maraschino liqueur
- 2 dashes Orange bitters
Stir with ice until cold, then strain.
Rocks, iced, cherry.
Taste
Two ounces of gin, a half ounce of maraschino, two dashes of orange bitters. The cherry liqueur is almond and pit as much as fruit, and it does the sweetening; there is no lemon. Stirred. Rocks with ice and a cherry. It sits: gin first, then a cherry film, and the cube.
History
Jacob A. Didier prints the Casino in 1909 The Reminder: two dashes each of maraschino, orange bitters, and lemon juice, a drink of Tom gin, stirred, cherry. Hugo R. Ensslin copies it almost verbatim in 1916 Recipes for Mixed Drinks, and Harry Craddock repeats it in the 1930 Savoy Cocktail Book. David Embury, in 1948, swaps orange juice for the bitters and tells you to mix it like an Aviation. This menu drops the lemon, pours a half ounce of maraschino rather than dashes, keeps two dashes of orange bitters, and serves it over ice in a rocks glass with a cherry.
