Taste

Three-quarters of an ounce of bourbon, three-quarters of Bénédictine, so the herbal liqueur is a full partner. Half an ounce of cognac, a quarter of orange liqueur, one dash of Angostura. Stirred, rocks with ice. Honey, orange peel, grape, corn, and bark, a small drink that sits.

History

The Cock 'n' Bull Special is named for Jack Morgan's British-style pub on Hollywood's Sunset Strip, opened in 1937 and later the house of the Moscow Mule. Ted Saucier prints it in Bottoms Up (1951) as a courtesy of the Cock 'n Bull: half an ounce of brandy, three-quarters each of Bénédictine and bourbon, a quarter of Cointreau, stirred, poured over a cube in a large chilled champagne glass, orange twist. The drink therefore dates between the bar's opening and 1951. This menu keeps those measures and adds a dash of Angostura, over ice in a rocks glass, no twist.
