Taste

Two ounces of aged rum, half an ounce of lime, and ginger beer over ice. Molasses against ginger heat, with lime cutting across both. Rounder and darker than the same build in vodka, and a lime wheel on the rim.

History

Bermuda's national drink, and nobody knows who first poured it. The story is British sailors on shore leave after the First World War. Gosling Brothers, a Bermuda merchant house since James Gosling landed at St George's in 1806 and renamed when Ambrose joined, sells both the Black Seal rum and a ginger beer, and was among the first to trademark a cocktail, in the late 1970s. That registration is why the trademarked spelling names Gosling's rum specifically, and why a generic pour goes under a plainer name. The generic pour here is two ounces of aged rum, half an ounce of lime, and ginger beer over ice, with a lime wheel.
