The code is the shorthand off my printed menu; the Key tab decodes every letter.
- 2 oz Rye
- 1 oz Grapefruit juice
- 1/2 oz Grenadine
Shake hard with ice, then strain.
Coupe.
Taste
Two ounces of rye, an ounce of grapefruit, half an ounce of grenadine. The grapefruit is sour and bitter where lemon would be only sour, and the grenadine's pomegranate sits under it as the sugar. Rye spice on top, a pink colour. Shaken, coupe. Drier than it looks.
History
Patrick Gavin Duffy prints it in 1934 in The Official Mixer's Manual as a long drink: three parts grapefruit juice to two of rye and one of grenadine. David Embury, in 1948, called it not particularly good but not too bad. Ted Haigh recut it in Vintage Spirits and Forgotten Cocktails in 2004 as a short sour, two of rye to one of grapefruit with a teaspoon of raspberry syrup, and that is the shape the revival kept; PDT printed it in 2011. Haigh's shape holds here, with grenadine for the raspberry: two ounces of rye, an ounce of grapefruit, and half an ounce of grenadine, shaken, coupe.
