Taste

Two ounces of vodka, half an ounce of dry vermouth. Four to one; the wine is in the drink. Stirred, coupe, lemon twist. Cold, grape.

History

A vodka Martini prints in a 1935 Smirnoff pamphlet at three parts vodka to one of French vermouth, with lemon peel in the mixing glass. Lucius Beebe puts two versions in The Stork Club Bar Book in 1946. Ted Saucier, in the 1951 Bottoms Up, credits photographer Jerome Zerbe with a four-to-one Vodkatini and a lemon twist. John G. Martin at Heublein spent the 1940s and 1950s selling Smirnoff as a mixer. The measure here is two ounces of vodka to half an ounce of dry vermouth, stirred, coupe, lemon.
