Taste

Two ounces of rye, then a half ounce each of sweet vermouth and maraschino. The vermouth is grape and sugar; the cherry liqueur is almond and pit. Stirred, coupe, cherry. Rye first, then a thin cherry film.

History

Vincenzo Errico built the Red Hook at Sasha Petraske's Milk & Honey in New York in 2003, a Manhattan crossed with a Brooklyn and named for the south Brooklyn neighborhood. Errico, an Italian bartender Petraske brought over after opening Milk & Honey London, used Punt e Mes, the bittersweet Turin vermouth, with rye and maraschino. He told Imbibe a fellow Italian neighbor in Brooklyn suggested the name. Two ounces of rye and a half ounce of maraschino, as Errico made it, with sweet vermouth standing in for the Punt e Mes.
