Taste

An ounce each of Campari and sweet vermouth with sparkling wine on top, over ice. Two thirds of a Negroni with the bubbles doing the gin's lifting: bitter orange and grape, lighter and lower in proof, fizzing at the edge under an orange twist.

History

Sbagliato means bungled. Mirko Stocchetto, at Bar Basso in Milan, reached for the spumante instead of the gin while building a Negroni and kept the result; Difford's dates the mistake to the late 1980s; Bar Basso itself says 1972. Bar Basso has served it ever since, in spumante rather than prosecco, in the oversized stemmed chalices Stocchetto designed in the 1980s and licensed to WMF. He died on 10 November 2016 and his family still runs the bar. This menu pours an ounce each of Campari and sweet vermouth, tops with Champagne, and serves it over ice with an orange twist.
