Taste

Three-quarters of an ounce each of scotch, gin, and sweet vermouth, so none of the three wins. Two dashes of orange bitters keep peel in the mix. Stirred, coupe, cherry. Juniper against malt, grape in the middle. A short equal-parts drink: two and a quarter ounces before the ice.

History

Jacques Straub prints an Auto Cocktail in 1914 Drinks as equal French vermouth, Tom gin, and Scotch whiskey, shaken. Frank Meier, at the Ritz Bar in Paris, prints the Automobile in The Artistry of Mixing Drinks in 1934: a dash of orange bitters and one-third each of Italian vermouth, gin, and Scotch whisky, stirred. This menu follows Meier. It pours three-quarters of an ounce each of scotch, gin, and sweet vermouth, two dashes of orange bitters, coupe, cherry.
