The code is the shorthand off my printed menu; the Key tab decodes every letter.
- 1 1/2 oz Campari
- 1 1/2 oz Sweet vermouth
- top with Soda water
Build in the glass over ice, then lift once with a barspoon.
Highball, iced, orange twist.
Taste
An ounce and a half each of Campari and sweet vermouth, then soda over ice. Equal pours, so bitter orange and grape sit level, and the soda stretches both into something you can drink for an hour. Low proof, and it stays bitter to the end. An orange twist goes over the top.
History
Gaspare Campari put his bitter together with Turin vermouth at the Caffe Campari on Milan's Piazza del Duomo in the 1860s and called it the Milano-Torino, after where the two bottles came from. Adding soda made it the Americano, American-style, though the name first belonged to a category: Italian producers sold vermouth with bitters already in it as vermouth americano, and Ferruccio Mazzon's 1920 Il Barista prints two different Americanos. It is the first drink Bond orders in Casino Royale. Here it is an ounce and a half each of Campari and sweet vermouth over ice, topped with soda, with an orange twist over it.
